Lake County Economic Development Advisory Council

The goal of the Lake County Economic Development Advisory Council is to serve as an independent advisory council to the Lake County Board of County Commissioners.

The Council also works with staff to support implementation of the Lake County Economic Development Strategic Plan, titled "Building Bridges for Economic Development in Lake County, Florida" provides creative thinking and realistic feedback throughout implementation of the strategic plan; and serves as advocates and coalition-builders to help ensure the community understanding to achieve recommendations set forth in the plan.

The advisory council functions as a council of the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission (EDC), a 501(c)6 organization. Lake County’s Director of Economic Growth & Redevelopment and the EDC’s Lake County Director serve as lead staff representatives to the advisory council. They work together to outline a program of work, coordinate meetings, develop agendas and facilitate council initiatives. In addition, EDC’s 35-member staff will be available to assist with administrative, creative and production needs of the advisory council and its committees.

The advisory council consists of 14 individuals:

  • Three municipal representatives, which are nominated by the Lake County League of Cities and rotating on a three-year cycle. To help ensure continuity, one region will rotate their representative each year in the three-year cycle. Each city representative should be an elected official.
    • One North Lake municipal representative (Mount Dora, Umatilla, Eustis, Lady Lake, Fruitland Park)
    • One Central Lake municipal representative (Leesburg, Astatula, Tavares, Howey-in-the-Hills)
    • One South Lake municipal representative (Clermont, Mascotte, Groveland, Minneola, Montverde)
  • Up to three chamber of commerce representatives, which are nominated by the Lake County Chamber Alliance and rotating on a three-year cycle. To ensure continuity, one region will rotate their representative each year in the three-year cycle. Chamber representatives may be either a chamber of commerce professional or a volunteer leader.
    • One North Lake Chamber representative
    • One Central Lake Chamber representative
    • One South Lake Chamber representative
  • Two educational representatives
    • President (or designee) from Lake Sumter Community College
    • Chairman or Superintendent from Lake County School Board
  • Metro Orlando EDC representative
    • President (or designee)
  • One representative from each target sector identified in the plan, which is recommended by the EDC and County staff to the Board of County Commissioners

    • Agritech
    • Arts, Recreation & Leisure
    • Business Services
    • Clean Tech

Term of service for the advisory council is a minimum of three to five years of engagement. As the work of the advisory council evolves, more specific decisions about the timeframe of this advisory effort will be determined.
